Our Facilities and Services
Ancillary services
Comprehensive radiology and physiotherapy services are available within the Royston Centre.
Car parking
An area is available at the front of the hospital for dropping off and picking up patients, and a large car parking area is located opposite the hospital entrance in Prospect Road, with entry from either Southland or Prospect Road.
Please note that Royston accepts no responsibility for car security.
Communications
Family and friends can phone you by dialling (06) 873 1111. Our receptionist will transfer calls directly to your room.
Patients and visitors are asked to check with nursing staff regarding the use of cell phones within the hospital as these can interfere with calibrated medical equipment.
Fax facilities are available at reception and if you have chosen a suite, broadband internet is available as a free service.
Cultural needs
Please let us know if you have any spiritual or cultural needs. If the services of an interpreter are required, please let us know well in advance of your admission to ensure that this is arranged. There is a cost for this service.
Day Surgery Unit (DSU)
If you are a day surgery patient, you will be cared for in our day surgery unit.
If your surgery can be carried out on a same day basis, your specialist will admit you through this unit whenever clinically appropriate. The advantage is that it is less disruptive for you. It means you will be absent from your own home or place of work for the minimum time possible. Also, and importantly, it reduces the cost of surgery to you because you do not need to utilise a private room. If it is your personal preference to have a private room even though your surgery does not necessitate this, you should discuss this with your specialist as soon as possible. A room booking can then be made for you.
Education and training
Qualified and experienced nursing staff provide high-quality clinical care. Their participation in ongoing training and education is actively supported and encouraged.
Throughout the year Royston Hospital is visited by trainee nurses. An essential part of their training is contact with patients, which occurs only under the direct supervision of our senior nursing staff. Such contact requires the support and consent of the patients involved and this is very much appreciated by trainees and senior staff. Your consent for trainees to be present will always be sought prior to any consultation or treatment.
Please feel free to ask us questions at any time. We also appreciate suggestions and feedback as we strive to provide the very best patient care.
Meals

In addition, you will be offered morning and afternoon tea and supper.
Our menu endeavours to cater for a variety of tastes and dietary needs; however, if nothing appeals, please ask for an alternative. If you have any particular dietary needs please discuss these with your nurse. Our food services staff will endeavour to ensure that any special requests are met.
Visitors
Mobility Equipment
Royston Hospital has a variety of mobility equipment for hire or purchase. If you wish to hire any of these items, a refundable deposit and weekly fee will apply. This deposit will be required prior to your discharge.
Operating Theatre
The operating suite comprises 3 theatres, an endoscopy procedure room and an 8 bed recovery unit fully equipped to meet the requirements of modern surgery.
Parent or Caregiver
Arrangements can be made for a parent or caregiver to be accommodated at the hospital. Please discuss your requirements with the Admissions Co-ordinator or Ward Team Leader prior to admission. Charges may apply.
Patient Rooms
At Royston we endeavour to give our patients a choice of room to suit their needs. Irrespective of your choice, you will receive the same high standard of nursing care. Overnight patients may choose (subject to availability and appropriate to your operation) a suite, a private room with en-suite, or a shared room with shared bathroom.
Our 3 suites offer a superior level of comfort. These suites are larger than the normal rooms, each with fridge, tea or coffee making facilities, TV/DVD with Sky, and broadband internet. Suites incur an additional charge over and above our usual room rate, although many medical insurance policies will cover this in whole or in part. Please contact the hospital to seek more information. Patients covered by ACC may elect to pay a surcharge to enjoy the special comfort provided by having a suite.
All patient rooms have TV (Sky), radio and telephone, and complimentary copies of the Dominion Post and Herald on Sunday newspapers are provided. The National Business Review is available on request from the nursing staff. A selection of general-interest and sporting magazines are also available for your reading pleasure during your stay.
A bathrobe will be provided for your use during your stay, and you will be given a complimentary pair of slippers which are yours to keep.
Physiotherapy
Your specialist and nursing staff will discuss with you the need for any physiotherapy. While you are free to make arrangements with any physiotherapist of your choice, Royston Hospital does receive an excellent service from the on-site physiotherapists at Focus Health. Located in the Royston Centre, Focus Health is well placed to meet your needs while you are in hospital and will be happy to continue to provide service after your discharge.
Please note that the costs of your physiotherapist will be charged directly to you and you should personally arrange payment of that account.
Quality Assurance Programme
In 2006 Royston Hospital was awarded a prestigious 4-year Certification status by the Ministry of Health. Regular audits are undertaken as part of our quality assurance programme. The audit process meets confidentiality and privacy requirements; the audit findings are confidential and the reporting is anonymous. These audits allow us to continually review and, where necessary, revise our practices. If, in the course of your stay or following discharge, you wish to discuss any aspect of your care, please contact our Ward Team Leader or Hospital Manager.
Smoke-free site
A smoke-free policy applies throughout the hospital, grounds and Royston Centre. Smokers will be required to document their understanding of this requirement on admission to Royston.
